Overview of Ruffwear Front Range Harness
Ruffwear established a reputation as one of the most popular brands when it comes to dog activity. The Ruffwear brand supply a successful range of problem solving accessories for outdoor dogs. The operate to the mission statement:
build performance product to enhance and inspire outdoor adventures for dogs and their human companions.
But will the claims support the reviewer and our readers?
Ruffwear Front Range Harness, as the name suggests, is a harness with back and front clips. In short, this means a aluminium v-ring hoop above the harness to clip your lead on. This is for normal walking with any leash. An additional reinforced webbing loop under the harness. Why the additional hoop? This allows certain leads to attach at the base for more control and training. These work with a variety of training leads. For this review we used our faithful Halti training lead, but you can search for other multi point leads which also do the job.
Tested On
We tested the two different sizes of Ruffwear Front Range Harness on different breeds. The first was on a Great Dane female approx two years old, the other on a six year old male Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The Great Dane is still young and considered “a puller”. This review will also cover a no pull harness perspective.
We tested both harnesses walking on familiar pavements and parks as well as unfamiliar areas, a beach as well as the woods.

Design
The harness has two side release buckles and four adjustment straps. This allows adjustments to the harness to better cater for your dogs movements. When fitting, particularly on our Cavalier, we were able to adjust each strap to make sure it was both secure and comfortable. As always, it’s recommended to leave a little space so it’s not too tight. The underside is padded around the chest and belly area for comfort.
The harnesses multiple straps makes it easier to cater for not only the chest but the shoulders and belly which can vary on dogs.
There are a few different methods of putting on and taking off a Ruffware Front Range Harness. We place the neck over the head then clip behind the front legs. Clips can pinch a dogs skin/ fur so pay close attention. To remove we unclip then carefully pull backwards over the head so it inverses.

Features
One nice feature of this harness is the pocket for the dog ID tags. In most countries (including the UK) having a dog ID is a legal requirement with owners name and contact details. The Ruffware Front Range Harness has the pocket on the top.
This doesn’t mean it’s time to bin the classic metal ID tag – they are usually fine clipped onto the top hoop. But for our Great Dane who can be very playful with other dogs – tags can get snagged. Worse, they come off (this happened to us) – so the ID tag pocket gives that extra option to keep it out of the way. The ID tag pocket seals with velcro. When opened there’s a string inside for attaching an ID. They’ve even included instructions in the pocket telling the owner how to attach the ID.
Another plus are the reflective trims around the harness. These are good for night time walks when visibility is low. We recently took our Great Dane to a house with five acres of land in the countryside. These trims were helpful when she disappeared for late night toilet. The reflective trims were sufficient to spot her as she bounded from place to place.
The primary material used on the Ruffwear Front Range Harness is nylon. The straps are woven.
Cleaning Instructions
The harness cleaned easily with a wet cloth for superficial spoilage. When we needed to clean properly, hand washing the harness, using a mild detergent then allow it to air dry as instructed worked well.
Style
I find the Ruffwear Front Range Harness to be the most fashionable looking out of all no-pull harness out there. It’s a sleek design and a comfortable fit when measured correctly. It also comes in multitude of colours (blue, green, poppy, purple, grey and berry) to tailor to your dog or pair with a nice lead.
Ruffwear caters to all sizes (ranging XXS to XL) and shapes, however, our finding is that it is not the best fitting harness for all dogs. Sure you can use the straps to adjust it, but in our tests it didn’t so well in fitting a Great Dane in the chest area. On the other hand, it fits and looks best on a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
Summary
The Ruffwear Front Range Harness is a reliable, dependable and stylish dog harness that should last a good length of time depending on the breed. It’s particularly good for dogs who pull or those you’re training not to pull. Check out our annual best dog harness guide to see where the Ruffwear ranks.
