What Are the 6 Best Dachshund Harnesses? Tried and Tested

With their long bodies and short legs, the beloved Dachshund is a quirky and wonderful breed. Finding the best Dachshund harness can be a challenge given its non-standard shape. With smaller breeds, we see a lot of people favouring a collar – however that has changed in recent years. Their primal “scent and chase” instincts mean these little scamps are primed for pulling on their leads or suddenly darting at a nearby critter.

During our day jobs looking after a number of dogs we have quite a few mischievous little Dachshund’s coming and going. These are the six best harnesses we’ve found we and and their owners work best for their Dachshund’s. If you’ve found others please comment below or check out our Facebook accounts and keep the conversation going.

🏆 Ruffwear All Day Adventure Dog Harness, Miniature Breeds

We’re big fans of the Ruffwear range as regardless of the breed, it has never disappointed us. The miniature breeds size is no exception and works wonders on a Ruffwear All Day Adventure Dog Harness, Miniature Breeds, Adjustable Fit, Size: XX-Small, Meadow Green, Front Range Harness, 30501-345S2 Dachshund. The Ruffwear harness is designed to better control your dog without risking throat injury. This is a front range harness meaning there are two dog lead clip attachments, one at the front and one at the back. The lead attachment on the back of the harness is a strong aluminium V-ring and is used for normal walking of your dachshund. Simply attach the lead and away you go. On the front of the harness (chest) is a reinforced webbing loop. If using a double ended training lead like the HALTI, the second attachment is clipped on here. This has two main functions – the first is to reduce pulling behaviour, the second is to give better control of your dog.

The inner lining of the Ruffwear harness has padded chest and belly panels for both comfort and to insulate your dog from sudden jerks from pulling behaviour. The harness is constructed from a sturdy and lightweight nylon material. Straps are woven and adapted from mountaineering technology for extra strong hold.

Straps are adjustable at the  shoulder, chest and belly for a more customised fit, although as dachshund sizes can vary its best to check the sizing before purchasing. There are also reflective strips on the harness to see your dog at night or in darker conditions.

Overall this is a great harness, perfect for standard walking but also as a no-pull and training harness.

A great Dachshund no-pull harness

The ruffwear isn't the cheapest out there but it's a great harness for a Dachshund. It comes with two lead attachments for both normal walking as well as training and reducing pulling. It's a comfortable fit, however check the sizes before ordering.

Julius-K9 162P-MM K9 PowerHarness

This UK company made its name creating strong harnesses for larger breeds. They’re extremely popular among dog walkers and they have extended their range to include smaller breeds. We’ve highlighted the mini-mini version of the harness, however depending on the measurements of your Dachshund, you may also want to Julius-k9, 162p-mm, K9-powerharness, Size: Mini-mini, Black look at the mini. With a range of nineteen different colours to choose from, it’s easy to see why the Julius-K9 is such a popular harness. It’s a very easy harness to put on, simply place the harness on the Dachshunds back and clip the strap on underneath.

The Julius-K9 is very robust with a scratch-resistant outer layer. The inner layer comprises a breathable skin for comfort and a solid fit for your dog.

The lead is attached using an attachment on the top, however it is worth noting that this harness does not come with an additional loop on the front for double ended leads. At the top of the harness is a strong handle which can be used for both holding your dog as well as lifting if out on more difficult terrain.

The belly strap has a heavy-duty plastic buckle and the chest strap has an adjustable hook and loop fastening, There is also a reflective strip on the belly for improved visibility of your dog in dark conditions.

It’s easy to see why this brand of harness is popular with dog walkers and owners of breeds large and small. For a Dachshund is it easy to put on and difficult to escape from, which given the breeds smaller leg size is an important consideration. Overall a wonderful harness which would be made better with the addition of a front loop. This shouldn’t affect most owners and is more a nice-to-have than a critical necessity.

A popular and effective harness

The Julius-K9 harness is a popular brand with dog walkers and owners. It's a well made harness at a good price. The handle is useful for better control though its lack of a front clip makes it a little less effective as a no-pull and training harness

Rabbitgoo No Pull Dog Harness

No small breed article would be complete without mentioning the Rabbitgoo harness. It’s a fairly well known and inexpensive harness and a good choice for smaller Rabbitgoo No Pull Dog Harness Small, Front Clip Pet Vest Harness with Handle Adjustable Padded Harness Easy Control Puppy Harness for Outdoor Training Walking-Black breeds. Like some of our previous harnesses, the Rabbitgoo has two metal lead attachment points – one on the back and one on the chest. This is used in combination with a double-ended lead, like the halti, where the back clip can be used for normal walking and the additional front clip can be used for better control or to extinguish pulling behaviour.

There are two adjustable side straps. One strap located on the neck and the other on the front. We noticed the straps were a little too rigid when we tested it which can be a little annoying. Reviewers on sites like Amazon have mentioned a similar criticism.

The harness uses a quick release buckle to put the harness on and take it off. The Rabbitgoo has reflective high visibility trims on the harness to help see your dog better in dark conditions.

Cheaper and good, but not perfect

Inexpensive but a little flawed in the sizing. Not a bad choice however and up there with the better harnesses.

TrueLove Dog Harness

The TrueLove harness has been one of our most popular referenced for smaller breeds, and one of our reviewers has raved about it in the past for their Jack Russell.

The TrueLove harness is feature-rich with a tough outer layer, soft mesh inner layer and sponge padding in the chest and belly areas; it has reflective nylon webbing for good night-time visibility, two side buckles, and two clips for leads (one on the back and one on the chest). You’ll know as soon as you fit it on your furry companion that it’s strong and durable.

The harness is more affordable than the others mentioned and it’s a good harness. Not perfect however.

Embark Active Dog Harness

We like this as Dachshund harness as it has many pros and yet few cons in general. It is an easy harness to both put on and take off  with minimal adjustment. A Embark Active Dog Harness, Easy On And Off With Front And Back Lead Attachments Control Handle - No Pull Training, Size Adjustable,Orange-S buckle on either side secures the dog in the harness. This is a no-pull harness with a ring on the back and chest. This allows you to use a double ended lead such as a HALTI to walk normally using the back or include the front for better control of your dog.

The harness has a soft padded interior to reduce chafing. Like many of the other harnesses it also has a reflective trim (hi-viz) for low light visibility.

This is a similarly-styled harness to the TrueLove; distributing pressure during a walk across more of the dog’s body. The chest ring can be used as a pull deterrent when training, as well as a seatbelt attachment in the car.

Now for the one big failing and it’s not a problem with the harness itself. Because of the Dachshund’s smaller legs and longer body, those that really pull may find it a little easier to escape from the Embark harness. Although unlikely it could be problematic should it fail when you need it most.

It’s worth mentioning that the Embark harness comes with a 100% money back and satisfaction guarantee, which sounds good to us!

Generally a great harness, but maybe not the best for a Dachshund

A solid harness comparable to others mentioned. It comes with great features and a money back guarantee. However it may not be ideal for a Dachshund.

Puppia Soft Harness

Puppia Soft Harness, S, Red Puppia Soft Harness, S, Red 610 Reviews

We’ve added the Puppia as it’s within the lower pricing range for a dog harness so may be a good option if you’re either on a budget or just trying a harness for the first time. Although fairly basic, these harnesses are popular and reliable. Made from 100% polyester, the Puppia harness comes in a range of fourteen different colours.

There’s not much to write about this harness. It’s fairly unremarkable but if you’re looking for basic then it’s a good choice. It certainly has no negatives beyond its feature set – although best to check the sizings before ordering as some feedback on fit has been mixed.
